snow grains photo library

Project objectives

The Snow Grain Photo Library is an outcome of different research projects carried out by the authors together with other research institutions. The project aims at supporting the identification of different snow grains and crystals sampled at different layers of snow cover. At present the library contains photos taken during field survey in the Svalbard Island (Norway) and in the Alps (Dolomites) with commercial cameras.

The images of the library show the snow grains and crystals as they appear on the crystal card when collected by a snow technician from snow cover layers; photos are arranged following the international classification of seasonal snow on the ground (2009). Zoomed images of each different snow types are available to simulate the use of a magnifying glass.

The Snow grain photo library will soon be open to contribution from the scientific and technical community.
